Vive Ligero is an initiative of the Inter-University Program for Latino Research (IUPLR) in conjunction with the Office of Minority Health, a division of the US Department of Health and Human Services. This campaign aims to increase awareness among Latinos about issues of weight and healthy living in an effort to break the pattern of obesity in our society today. By addressing the obesity epidemic amongst Latinos through a culturally attuned information campaign that, in coordination with existing efforts of the US Department of Health and Human Services, it is Vive Ligero's mission to increase Latinos’ knowledge and awareness of the adverse health effects of excess weight and obesity and of the importance of healthy eating habits and exercise. Building upon established partnerships in Latino communities across the United States, IUPLR has created this national obesity prevention campaign, utilizing a bilingual, culturally specific approach to weight issues, education, and health promotion that targets US born and immigrant Latinos and Latinas, of all ages, education and income levels.
